Assignment (1 paragraph): Project yourself 5 or so years into the future. You may have a job or be pursuing a graduate degree. You may be married and/or have children. Now, consider all the concepts you’ve learned about in Psychology 101. What one thing that you learned will be most relevant to you 5 years from now? That is, what one thing that you’ve learned this semester will you remember best and be most applicable or provide you with the most insight in the context the life you envision yourself living? Why?
Your work will be evaluated on the following criteria:
the clarity of your understanding of the concept you’ve chosen.
the creativity and clarity of your rationale for having chosen the concept.
the creativity and accuracy with which you relate the concept to the future you project for yourself.
An aspect of psychology that appeals to me most in the bio-psycho-sociocultural model which explains that each individual is a unique culmination of her/his biological factors (genetics), psychological factors (personality, mood and behavior) and sociocultural factos (social environment, cultural baggage owned, familial impact, etc.) A person may inherit very many aspects of their being from their families, moreover their environment too decides significant aspects of their being. This is closely related to the nature v/s nurture debate and aims to explain each individual as a result of their genes as well as the environment they are nurtured in. None of the two have been seen to have a lesser impact than the other, which is why they are debated to date. The manner in which most of us create our perceptions, worldview, belief systems, values, etc are closely associated with the kind of messages regadring different themes that we receive implicitly or explicitly while growing up. These keep on become more and more persistent as and when the affect, behavior and cognition act upon them and some of them are reinforced repeatedly whereas some are discarded. With more and more experience, it so happens that these become automated in nature and form what we call our personality. In future I view myself in a space where I can have my personal work practice. This is closely linked to the environment that I've been given and also my biological temperament (reserved, self-oriented, quiet and shy). Moreover, due to a small family, this was reinforced and I became used to being self-reliant, independent thinker and got used to taking onus for own actions.
