What is meant by:
1. Hydrophilic?
2. Hydrophobic?
3. Surface wetting?
4. Capillary action?
Please type your answer, do not write it.
1. Hydrophilic: Hydrophilic are those which get absorbed or dissolved in water very easily because they are polar and ionic compounds (water is also polar compound).
2. hydrophobic means resistant to water. it only dissolve in oil-based substances. Hydrophobic molecules are non-polar in nature.
3. Surface wetting: The behavior of a liquid on a solid surface i.e. how the liquid spread out on the solid surface. there are two general catogerisation of suface wetting. (i) total wetting (ii) partial wetting
In total wetting there is storng affinity between the liquid and solid substrate, while less affinity in partial wetting.
4. Capillary action: It is ability of liquid to rise or flow in very narrow path, it is due to the strong adhesion between the liquid and solid surface (when adhesive force to the surface is stronger than the cohesive force between the liquid molecules).
