Ans. Sperm is the Male gamete which tends to fuse with female gamete that is ovum. Many couples are not able to fulfill their dream of having child and in this case reproductive endocrinologists can help the couple .These are fertility specialists ,they can treat and diagnose the fertility issues .Prefertilization sperm sorting is done that is seperation of sperms (x,y) according to their weight by flow cytometry. In this method the difference in the weight is utilized because sperm with x chromosome is heavier.Vital dye differentiate between the sperm x and y (Hoechst 33259 intercalating is a vital DNA stain) .Quantitative fluorescent measurement is done in which laser excitation of dye in the sperm occur ,emission of fluorescence .Achieved signals are proportional to DNA content ,flow sorting of sperm is done.In the viable sperm sorting approx 80 to 85% sperms are sorted correctly. The main purpose of the sperm sorting is to select the viable sperms and these sperms are used for artificial insemination. For childless couples where Male sperms are not capable to swim and reach to the ovum for fertilization. These sperms can also be used for in vitro fertilization .In case of cattles the sperms of a desired male is selected to achieve desired offspring.
