Coenzyme Q oxidized by complex III is reduced by:
A) complex I
B) complex II
C) complex III
D) complex IV
E) Glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase
Oxidation means loss of electrons.
Reduction means gain of electrons.
Electron transport chain:-
• This is series of electron transporters situated at inner
mitochondrial membrane, which release electrons from NADH and FADH2
and forms ATP.
It is formed by five complexes, Coenzyme Q and cytochrome C.
• Complex 1 gets electron from NADH and Complex 2 gets electrom
from FADH2.
• Both complex 1 and 2 transfer their electrons to coenzyme
Q.
• Coenzyme Q receives electrons means, it reduced by both complex 1
and 2.
• Complex 3 receives electrons from coenzyme Q , here coenzyme Q
losses electrons means it is oxidised and complex 3 receives
electrons means it is reduced.
Summary -
• Complex 1 and 2 reduce coenzyme Q, or coenzyme Q oxidises conplex
1 and 2.
• Coenzyme Q reduces complex 3, or complex 3 oxidises coenzyme
Q.
Hence this series go on...
Now in question,
Option (A) and (B) both are correct answers.
Complex 3 receives electrons from both complex 1 and 2, hence it is
reduced by both complex 1 and 2.
Other options -
• Complex 3 - it reduces cytochrome C.
• Complex 4 - it reduces molecular oxygen and concert it into water
molecules.
• Glycerol 3 phosphate dehydrogenase - not involved in this
series.
