Defining Features
Interphase
  • During interphase, the cell grows replicates its DNA and prepares for mitosis.
  • The nucleolus and the nuclear envelope are distinct and the chromosomes are in the form of thread like chromatin.
Prophase
  • Chromosomes condense and become visible.
  • Spindle fibres emerge from the centrosomes.
  • Nuclear envelope breaks down.
  • Centrosomes move toward opposite poles.
Metaphase
  • Thick, coiled chromosomes each with two chromatids are lined up on the metaphase plate (equatorial plane).   
  • Each sister chromatid is attached to a spindle fibre (microtubules) orginating from opposite poles.
Anaphase
  • Centromeres split into two.
  • Sister chromatids are pulled toward opposite poles and become individual chromosomes.
  • The poles move apart and microtubules get shorter.
Telophase
  • Chromosomes arrive at opposite poles and begin to decondense.
  • Nuclear envelope material surrounds each set of chromosomes.
  • The mitotic spindle breaks down and continues to push poles apart.
  • A belt-like contractile ring of actin filaments develops in the peripheral cytoplasm at the cells equator.
Ctyokinesis
  • Constriction of the ring produces a cleavage furrow.
  • Cytoplasm and its organelles are divided into two daughter cells, each with one nucleus.
