A single point charge of -4.0x10^-9C has an electric field at 0.5m from the charge of...

a) 144N/C away from the charge
b) 144N/C towards the charge
c) 72N/C away from the charge
d) 72N/C towards the charge

i got 144N/C but i dont know if it is right or the direction?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:-

apply the formula for electric field = (kQ)/r^2

k = 9*10^9
Q = -4.0 x 10^–9C
r = 0.5 m

then E = 144 N/C towards the charge.

The electric field direction about a negative source charge is always directed toward the negative source.
