Match the following properties of liquids to what they indicate about the relative strength of the intermolecular forces in that liquid.
Strong intermolecular forces: Weak intermolecular forces:
-high boiling point
-high vapor pressure
-high surface tension
-high viscosity
Identify the properties of liquids based on the forces present in the molecules into strong and weak.
The intermolecular forces are the forces that are present in the molecules. These can be of two types: strong or weak. Liquids having strong and weak intermolecular forces have different properties.
Liquids with strong intermolecular forces have the following properties:
i)High boiling point: The liquids with strong intermolecular forces have high boiling point because the forces present in the molecule of the liquid are very strong. So, it takes of lot of energy to overcome these forces.
ii)High surface tension: Since the intermolecular forces of the liquids are very strong, the molecules stay close to each other. Therefore, they have very high surface tension.
iii)High viscosity: The strong intermolecular forces lead to the resistance of the flow of the liquid.
Liquids with weak intermolecular forces have the following properties:
i)Low boiling point: The liquids with strong intermolecular forces have high boiling point because the forces present in the molecule of the liquid are very strong. So, it takes of lot of energy to overcome these forces.
ii)High vapor pressure: The liquids with weak intermolecular forces have very high vapor pressure because the forces between them are very weak and the molecules of the liquid get converted to the condensed phase very quickly.
iii)High viscosity: The strong intermolecular forces lead to the resistance of the flow of the liquid.
The properties of liquids which indicate the intermolecular forces in liquids are as follows:
High boiling point: Strong intermolecular forces
High surface tension: Strong intermolecular forces
High viscosity: Strong intermolecular forces
The strong intermolecular forces in the liquids lead to very strong bonds, which result in very high boiling point of the liquid, high surface tension and high viscosity of the liquid.
The properties of liquids which indicate the intermolecular forces in liquids are as follows:
High vapor pressure: Weak intermolecular forces
The properties of liquids indicating the relative strength of the intermolecular forces in liquids are as follows:
High boiling point: Strong intermolecular forces
High surface tension: Strong intermolecular forces
High viscosity: Strong intermolecular forces
High vapor pressure: Weak intermolecular forces
The liquids with weak intermolecular forces have weak bonds in their molecules. These weak bonds lead to high vapor pressure of the liquid.
The properties of liquids indicating the relative strength of the intermolecular forces in liquids are as follows:
High boiling point: Strong intermolecular forces
High surface tension: Strong intermolecular forces
High viscosity: Strong intermolecular forces
High vapor pressure: Weak intermolecular forces
