A person with type O blood has been involved in a car accident and excessive bleeding necessitates a blood transfusion. Due to an error by a careless laboratory technician, the person is given type B blood. Explain what will happen.
It is given that a person with blood group O faces A lot of bleeding.
Now, Blood group O have no antigen on their red blood cells where as A and B antibodies are found in the blood.
This person is given type B blood group. Now, type B blood group have B antigen and A antibodies in the blood.
This is the case of mismatched blood transfusion.
Now when this blood is given to the O blood group, then there is found interaction with the B antigen from B blood group and B antibodies from O blood group. This leads to the agglutination (clumping) of red blood cells in the O blood group person. This antibodies also attack the newly formed red blood cells. That's why this can lead to life threatening of that person because he does not get enough amount of oxygen to all parts of the bodybody because red blood cells are clumped by this antigen- antibodies interaction.
