1.When 2.18 g of methane burns in oxygen, 109 kJ of heat is produced. What is the enthalpy of combustion (in kJ) per mole of methane under these conditions?

Solutions

Expert Solution

methane combustion reaction :

CH4 + 2O2 --------------------> CO2   + 2H2O

moles of methane = mass / molar mass

                                = 2.18 g / 16 g

                               = 0.13625

enthalpy of combustion = -109 kJ / 0.13625

                                          = - 800 kJ
