Hydrochloric acid can dissolve solid iron according to the following reaction. Fe(s)+2HCl(aq)→FeCl2(aq)+H2(g) What minimum mass of HCl in grams would you need to dissolve a 2.5 g iron bar on a padlock? How much H2 would be produced by the complete reaction of the iron bar?
number of mole = (given mass)/(molar mass)
molar mass of Fe = 55.8 g/mol
number of mole of Fe = 2.5/55.8
= 0.045 mole
according to given balanced reaction in question
1 mole Fe require 2 mole of HCl
0.045 mole Fe require (2*0.045) mole of HCl
minimum number of mole of HCl = (2*0.045) mole
= 0.09 mole
molar mass of HCl = 36.5 g/mol
minimum mass of HCl require = (molar mass)*(minimum number of mole
of HCl )
= (0.09*36.5) g
= 3.3 g
also, according to given reaction
1 mole of Fe produce 1 mole of H2
0.045 mole of Fe produce 0.045 mole of H2
number of mole of H2 produce = 0.045 mole
molar mass of H2 = 2 g/mol
mass of H2 produce = (number of mole of H2)*(molar mass of
H2)
= (0.045*2)
= 0.09 g
