List three factors that are positively related to public sector strike activity and explain how these are related to the airline industry.
Answer:
The public sector is defined as the part of national economy providing basic goods or services that are either not, or cannot be, provided by the private sector. It consists of national and local governments, their agencies, and their chartered bodies. The public sector is one of the largest sectors of any economy; in the US, for example, it accounts for about 20 percent of the entire economy(Business Dictionat, n.d.). So, these are the good and services that are provided by the U.S. Government. This includes things like fire fighters, police, state park services, United States Postal Service, and the Coast Guard just to name a few.
factors that are positively related to public sector strike activity:
As for the three factors that are positively related to the public sector are the rate of wage increases, increases in the cost of living, and fiscal belt tightening. Also, private sector unemployment and recessions are related to reduced public-sector strike activity (Fossum, 2012).
It’s hard to relate the public-sector strike activity to that of the aviation industry as the public sector falls under the government and the aviation industry mostly falls within the private sector. However, wages increase and cost of living seem to be a universal cause for strike. In both the public and private sector employee want to be paid a fair wage and be able to maintain a certain level of living. Also, as I stated above private sector strike activity is related to reduced public-sector strike activity. Essentially this is government employees seeing that their current situation is that bad compared to that of their counterparts in the private sector. So, they seem to be more content with their situation during times of financial hardships with in the private sector.
