Of all failures of a certain type of computer hard drive, it is determined that in 15% of them only the sector containing the file allocation table is damaged (F), in 65% of them only nonessential sectors are damaged (S), and in 20% of the case , both the allocation sector and one or more essential sectors are damaged.A failed drive is selected at random and examined.

a)Represent this information in Venn Diagram

b)Given that the drive has damaged file allocation sector.

1) what is the probability that some nonessential sectors are damaged as well?

2)what is the probability that no nonessential sectors are damaged?

c)Given that the drive has damaged nonessential sector.

1)what is the probability that file allocation sector is damaged as well?

2)what is the probability that allocation sector is not damaged?

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a) The problem can be represented as a venn diagram given below:

A= Allocation Sector

B= Non-essential sector

A and B= Allocation and Non-essential sector both

We are given

P(A) = Probability of allocation sector being damaged = 0.15 + 0.20 = 0.35

P(B) = Probability of non-essential sector being damaged = 0.65 + 0.20 = 0.85

P(A B) = Probability of both allocation sector and non- essential sector being damaged = 0.20

(b) (i)

Let event A= the allocation sector is damaged

B= the non-essential sector is damaged

We have to find P( B/A) and we know,

P( B/A ) = = = 0.57

(b) (ii) P( / A) = 1- P( B/A) = 1 - 0.57 = 0.43

(c) (i)

Let event A= the allocation sector is damaged

B = the non-essential sector is damaged

P( A/ B) = = = 0.23

(c) (ii) P( /B)= 1- P( A/B) = 1 - 0.23 = 0.77

A hard Drive manufacturers is required to ensure that the mean time between failures for its new hard drive is 1 million hours. A stress test is designed that can simulate the workload at a much faster rate. The test is designed so that a test lasting 10 days is equivalent to the hard drive lasting 1 million hours. In stress tests of 15 hard drives, the average is 9.5 days with a standard deviation of 1 day. Can the...

The hard drive in your computer is full of valuable files and data. Write a memo to Paul Roberto your supervisor, requesting that your hard drive be replaced by one with greater capacity (or that a second hard drive be added to your system). Make as strong a case as you can: e.g. greater productivity, better programs, etc.   Note : the Answer Should be Computerized

Since the computer hard drive was invented in 1956, a con- stantly increasing data storage capacity has been available at an ever-decreasing cost. Use the historical data of hard drive capacities and prices shown in Figure 3-29 (or download the Excel file named CH03Ex01). Modify the spreadsheet so that it includes a new column containing formulas that calculate a common measure of disk size (GB) and a second new column that computes the cost per GB for each year. (Recall...

Bramble Corp. sells two types of computer hard drives. The sales mix is 30% (Q-Drive) and 70% (Q-Drive Plus). Q-Drive has variable costs per unit of $ 150 and a selling price of $ 210. Q-Drive Plus has variable costs per unit of $ 165 and a selling price of $ 255. Bramble’s fixed costs are $ 729000.
