consider static fluid force. Think about a thin steel plate in the shape of an equilateral triangle. The triangle is submerged vertically in water. In your discussion post, respond to the following: How do you think the static fluid force acting on the surface changes (increase, decrease, same) in the following positions? Vertex up against the surface with opposite side parallel to the surface Side up against the surface Vertex up against the surface with the side perpendicular to the surface

How do you think the static fluid force acting on the surface changes (increase, decrease, same) in the following positions?

Vertex up against the surface with opposite side parallel to the surface

Side up against the surface

Vertex up against the surface with the side perpendicular to the surface

Solutions

Expert Solution

consider static fluid force only

for an equilateral triangle submerged into the liquid
if it is submerged horizontally or vertically, the opposite faces of the triangle handle equal and oppsoite hydrostatic pressure from both sides and hence the force on the triangle in bopth the xcases is 0

hence static force of the fluid does not change on a submerged equilateral triangle with change in orientation of the triangle in water

hence in any of the cases, if the triangle is submerged under water, net force on the triangle will be zero due to the equal hydrostatic pressure acting on both surfaces of the equilateral triangle causing net force due to hydrostatic pressure on the triabgle to be 0 in all cases

Analytical Solution steps For a flat plate solar collector, with water as the working fluid, consider a design for heating water from 22°C to 60°C. The temperature of the air and the surroundings is 310 K. The system is designed for a flow rate of 0.03 gpm. The water exhibits fully developed, laminar flow in a 0.05 diameter pipe, with a constant surface flux. The collector plate experiences losses due to convection and radiation, which can be accounted for using...

Consider a 40,000 km steel pipe in the shape of a ring that fits snuggly all around the circumference of the Earth. We are heating now the ring so its temperature increased by 1 degree C. Now, the pipe will no longer be snug. How high the ring will now stand above ground level? (Make as many simplifications as necessary). Data: Coefficient of linear expansion for steel is 11*10-6 /degree C. This means, for example, that a 1-meter bar of...

Consider a 2.5cm diameter thin walled horizontal cylindrical pipe that carries chilled water at about 5°C. The pipe is very long and is indoors in a climate controlled area with essentially still air. Design an insulation system that will reduce heat gain per unit length of pipe by at least 75% as compared to the heat gain to the bare pipe. Completely specify the insulation system (materials, dimensions, etc.) you design.
