In the 18th century, China was the major power in Asia, and a significant power
internationally. By 1940, this situation had radically changed. What factors (both internal
and external) led to this shift?
It goes to back in the 15th century when the European were trying to develop the route to get into China which was the part of East Indies and therefore with the starts of trade and business in China it has started to develop and slowly become the Major power in Asia in the 18th century.
The knowledge of Chinese society was shared with Europeans and they also learned a lot from the Chinese culture and history this eventually lead to the understanding of a noble science and development in the society with a mixed talent pool of Europeans and Chinese.
Internal Factor:
There are several facts reveals that in the 18th century China was the only country in the world who has enjoyed a much respectful and royal culture of comfort that time. However the reason behind the change in the Chinese royal time was its bombarding population which was the reason behind situation change radically. In the year 1650 the Chinese population was around 150 million which has reached to the number 300 million by the year 1800 and it was developing at the same pace and reached to the 450 million in the 19th century. This has lead to resource shortage and shortage of farming land which in turn affected the national economy and development. And another important factor was collapse of the strong Chinese dynastic system.
External factor:
The foremost important factor responsible for diminishing China was revolution in the other Asian countries and world war II.
