Judy traveled frequently, and because she experienced extreme turbulence on one trip that made her feel as if the plane could crash, she now refuses to fly. For shorter trips she drives her car. For longer trips, she takes trains, and even boats, to her destinations. Even at the thought of taking a flight she has an increased heart rate, palpitations, feels sick, shakes, sweats, has a dry mouth, chest pains, a 'knot in the stomach', and fast breathing.

Goal of therapeutic approach:

  • To help Judy accept her fear for flights.
  • To help Judy gradually challenge hear fear for flight.
  • To help Judy to build confidence in herself to face her fear of flights.
  • To assist Judy to master skills to control her anxiety and fear for flights.

Treatment approach

  • Teaching relaxation techniques as deep breathing and muscle relaxation techniques to maintain calmness and reduce the physical anxiety reactions that she has during her panic attack.
  • Creating a step by step process for Judy to face her fear,to reduce her anxiety and overcome her fear for flight ,that is helping her to desensitize her fear for flights.The steps can be as following.
    • ​Step 1: looking at the images and pictures of aeroplanes.
    • Step 2: watching videos of aeroplanes in flight.
    • Step 3: watching take off of planes in real settings.
    • Step 4: booking a flight ticket.
    • Step 5: preparing and packing for the journey or flight.
    • Step 6: driving to the airport.
    • Step 7: check in the airport.
    • Step 8: waiting on board for the plane.
    • Step 9: getting on the plane
    • Step 10: taking the flight.
  • Working through each step at a time.Helping Judy by working at a step ,helping her to stay at each step untill her fear for the step subsides.Guiding her to practice relaxation techniques whenever panic attacks her. Thus, in step by step manner guiding Judy to reach her goal of overcoming her fear for planes.
