In one or two sentences describe the corrosion failure mode. What is one visual cue to indicate corrosion? Does corrosion always necessitate part replacement?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Corrosion is degradation of metals or alloys & their properties due to a chemical or electrochemical reaction with the surrounding environment. Failure can occur either by sufficient material property degradation or by the fracture that originates from or is propagated by corrosive effects. There are various modes of corrosions like uniform, galvanic, crevice corrosion, pitting so on and so forth.
  • Surface damage (localised) indicates corrosion.
  • Corrosion can be removed using phosphoric acid, but to avoid catastrophic failures in the structures it is always better to replace the corroded part. (Due to the presence of corrosion, the system will no longer able to perform its desired job.)
