In what ways are corporate mission statements more than just “public relations”?
There are some criticism for corporate mission statements that they are just public relations tool but mission statements are more than that. Corporate mission statements is a statement which state about the purpose of their business. Mission statement state about the existence of their business and compliment its vision means where the business wants to be in future from current position.
Where public relations is about communicating company's positive image in the eyes of public, Mission statement helps corporations to have a strong foundation to form and implement business strategies. It is like a vantage point for corporations to see the clear direction in order to achieve its end vision.
Lest look at mission statement of Walmart which is “to save people money so they can live better.”
Many people will consider it as PR tool to percieve that this mission statement tells about its good image and care for customers but this simple and concise mission statement allows walmart to form business strategy like being low cost leader to gain competitive advantage.
Mission statement of corporation does not create good relations with public but inspire its employees, make corporations memorable and set out purpose for future vision.so in these ways, Corporate mission statements are more than just PR.
