  1. Estimate the 2018 energy savings potential on a national scale of replacing all incandescent bulbs in home (residential) with the new energy efficient fluorescent bulbs. Consider that in 2018, total US energy consumption was 101.3 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu). Electricity consumption for all applications amounts for 13 quads, and residential is 11.9% of all electricity consumption in US. Assume that all energy consumption for residential lightning is due to incandescent bulbs and that all those are replaced by fluorescent bulbs. How large are energy savings compared to annual US energy and electricity consumption? State your answer on a percentage basis.

  1. From a LCA perspective, define a functional unit and equivalence for this comparison of fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. How many incandescent bulbs are needed to equal one fluorescent bulb? Comment your results. (4 points)
  2. Develop an inventory of costs over the life cycle for each bulb type. Compare cost over the life cycle for fluorescent bulbs vs. incandescent bulbs. Which stage of the life cycle accounts for the greatest cost to the consumer? (8 points)

  1. NOTE: be careful with unit conversion, purposely the information comes in a mix of units.

Solutions

Expert Solution

(b) A functional unit would be the lumen as the light output should be the same no matter what bulbs we use. One fluorescent bulb gives 985 lumens while one incandescent bulb gives 1000 lumens so, one flurescent bulb is equivalent to 985/1000 = 0.985 incandescent bulbs. That is, 0.985 incandescent bulbs are required to equal one flurescent bulb. This is expected as the light output of a fluorescent bulb is slightly less than that of an incandescent bulb.

(c)

We see that the energy consumption stage (use stage of the bulbs) of the life cycle accounts for the greatest cost to consumer.

Compact fluorescent bulbs are much more efficient at producing light than are ordinary incandescent bulbs. They initially cost much more, but last far longer and use much less electricity. According to one study of these bulbs, a compact bulb that produces as much light as a 100 W incandescent bulb uses only 23.0 W of power. The compact bulb lasts 1.00×104 hours, on the average, and costs $ 12.0 , whereas the incandescent bulb costs only 75.0 ¢, but lasts...

(b) Fluorescent lamps are much more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs. The explanation lies in the way each produces light. When light is produced by the incandescent bulbs, electrical energy passes through a wire, heating it until glows. The wire, called a filament, typically is made of tungsten. The enclosing bulbs around the filament directs or diffuses the light. The problem is that 90% of the energy put into such a bulb is released in the form of heat while...

The city of Metropolis is considering replacing incandescent bulbs in traffic lights with light-emitting diode (LED) lights because they use significantly less energy and last much longer without abrupt failure. Currently Metropolis has 80,000 incandescent bulbs in traffic lights at approximately 12,000 intersections. It is estimated that replacing all the incandescent bulbs with LED will cost $46.02 million. However, the investment is also estimated to save the city $8.85 million per year in energy costs. An article in Scientific American pointed out that replacing a 75 watt incandescent bulb with an 18 watt compact fluorescent bulb would save about 75% in the cost of electricity. Electricity is generally priced per kilowatt-hour (kW-h). Using the price of electricity where you live, and the fact that an incandescent bulb has a typical life of only ~750 hours, calculate how much money you would save over the life of one 18 watt compact fluorescent bulb (~10,000 h) versus...
