This is normally accomplished through methylation of a cytosine:

a. paternal effect   b. imprinting   c. epistasis   d. maternal inheritance   e. aromatase

Solutions

Expert Solution

Imprinting

  • People inherit two copies of their genes—one from their mother and one from their father.
  • Usually both copies of each gene are active
  • In some times , only one of the two copies is normally turned on. Which copy is active depends on the parent of origin
  • some genes are normally active only when they are inherited from a person’s father;
  • others are active only when inherited from a person’s mother.

This phenomenon is known as genomic imprinting.

  • methylation, is a chemical reaction that attaches small molecules called methyl groups to certain segments of DNA.
  • Thesemolecules identify which copy of a gene was inherited from the mother and which was inherited from the father.
  • The addition and removal of methyl groups can be used to control the activity of genes.
  • Epistasis ,when one Gene locus mask or modify the genotype of second locus
  • Paternal effect mutations are defined as mutations that when present in males affect the development of their offsping
  • Aromatase is enzyme responsible for conversion of androgen to estrogen and testosterone to estradiol
  • Maternal inheritance is a type of heredity in which the characters are influemced more by egg than sperm.
