b. Who is a ‘port technician’?
A port technician is the person who is involved in ships’ maintenance as well as their repair when they reach to shores. The port technician also manages and repairs mobile harbor and RTG cranes. A rubber tyred crane is used at port to stack or ground containers supplied by ships. A port technician is thus not only manages ships but also other cranes. Similarly, the port technician is responsible for management and repairs of mobile harbor cranes. A port technician helps a port engineer to manage port activities. He or she manages inventories, procures tug requisition items, and purchases engineering supplies. He or she is also responsible to maintain landing barge. The port technician is also responsible to manage tools and equipments in safe way and has ability to organize the work. He or she is responsible to record data as well as assess and interpret obtained data. As the port technician is assisting port engineer to complete the work, a port technician is required to assist him in maintenance of ships and their repair. The port technician inspects equipment and machinery of ships. Port technician is also assisting port engineer to complete the task with minimum cost. Casualties of machine are also investigated by the port technician. A port technician does the manual work such as scrubbing and removing rust from a ship, polishing it, etc. he or she is responsible to diagnose a ship fully. Thus, there are many duties being performed by a port technician.
