Your best friends invite you over for pizza and a friendly game of cards. Describe how the following parts of the brain are involved during your evening of eating pizza, socializing, and playing cards: Broca’s area, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and occipital lobe.
Broca's area is a region in the frontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere (usually the left) of the hominid brain with functions linked to speech production. This area will be helpful in communication with our friends and thus in socialization process.
The hippocampus is a small organ located within the brain's medial temporal lobe and forms an important part of the limbic system, the region that regulates emotions. The hippocampus is associated mainly with memory, in particular long-term memory. The organ also plays an important role in spatial navigation. This area will help us in navigation to reach the destination of the party as well as remember the details like venue, timing etc.
Hypothalamus is a small portion of the brain, roughly the size of an almond in humans, located just above the brain stem. The hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland and also regulates homeostasis (hunger, thirst, body temperature, and the like). This will regulate our body and tell us when we are hungry and ready to eat the pizza or when we are thirsty.
The occipital lobe is one of the four major lobes of the cerebral cortex in the brain of mammals. The occipital lobe is the visual processing center of the mammalian brain containing most of the anatomical region of the visual cortex. Damage to them results in loss of visual capability, an inability to identify colors, and hallucinations. This area will help us in viewing things correctly such as the way while travelling or cards and the colours on the cards while paying.
