A reaction was performed in which 0.47 g of dibenzyl ketone was reacted with 0.47 g of benzil to make 0.68 g of 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylpentadienone. Calculate the theoretical yield and percent yield for this reaction.

Solutions

Expert Solution

dibenzyl ketone + benzil ------------------> 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylpentadienone

moles of dibenzyl ketone = 0.47/ 210.27 = 2.235 x 10^-3

moles of benzil = 0.47/ 210.232 = 2.236 x 10^-3

moles of 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylpentadienone produced = 2.235 x 10^-3

mass of 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylpentadienone = 2.235 x 10^-3 x 384.47 = 0.8595 g .

Theoretical yield in grams = 0.86 g

percent yield = (actual / theoretical x 100

                     = (0.68 / 0.86 ) x 100

                     = 79 %
