How did imperialism change the cultures of the conquering and conquered countries?
British East India company was established in 1600 AD.It started to trade with India and had monopoly. Soon they realized that making India a colony, trade may give an outstanding profits. They took benefit of political instability and became rulers.
India was living in villages along with self sufficient economies. There were separate trade guilds with specialization of labors. Urban centers were the hubs for intra and inter country trade. When Britishers became rulers they made India a colony and asked farmers to grow commercial crops that can be taken to England as raw material and processed into finished goods and sold to India. This was dual benefit for them as industries prospered and also trade got a lot of money to increase British GDP. However, in India as trade guilds went down and food crops production suffered Indian economy went down and famines started. India contributed around 25 %in 1600 to World GDP. In 1947 it was less than 2%. Britishers became more advanced. Consumerism increased and also spending on education and health which made them more liberal. India went behind, people due to poverty had to leave ancestral professions and casteism, religion based conflicts increased. This shows how India and Britain both changed cultures. England out of prosperity and India out of poverty.
