Read the 2008 paper by Spanos et al. “A nonlinear model for top fuel dragster dynamic performance assessment” (attached to this file) as an example. Even if you don’t understand everything in the paper, please try to answer the following questions in your own words after reading it:

Here is a link to the paper:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/261913459_dragsterSAE

a) What is the general aim of this paper?

b) Did the authors actually test the predictions of their model?

c) Do you think the simulations are reliable? Why / why not?

d) Do you think the authors are racers themselves?

e) Do you recognize some of the concepts we discussed in class and in other courses at ODU?

f) Do you believe you would be able to carry out such a theoretical research project yourself on a different racecar of your interest? If not, what can the university / department / instructor do better to provide you with the necessary skills (assuming you think it would be worthwhile for you to have this type of proficiency)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) To understand and enhance the performance of a top fuel dragster in an actual race and it is found that it can be used to improve the aerodynamics, the engine and clutch set-ups of the vehicle, and to possibly facilitate the redesign of the dragster.

b) I believe they must have gone through the simulation and analysis because its a dynamic model . otherwise we can not get such results without using actual analysis. Numerical simulation is the prediction of test model done by the authors.

c) simulations are reliable depending upon the given analysis, but seeing the numerical results only we cannot claim for its real working situations feasibility without testing.

d) whether the authors are racers or not, it can not be concluded based on the research paper. you can contact them directly through the link provided by you.

e) question is concern to your class notes.

f) question is concern to your university whether such facility is availaible in your university or not.

In the paper by Cuervo et al, explain a) why it was important, from the perspective of being able to demonstrate the influence of sexual selection, that the authors followed up on their original (1996) study; and b) why, if they were attempting to demonstrate that sexual selection was acting to lengthen male tail length, they studied females and not males. Paper title: Experimental manipulation of tail length in female barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) affects their future reproductive success

This is a summary from Physics World of the paper: L J Wang et al. 2000 Nature 406 277-- "Wang and colleagues begin by using a third continuous-wave laser to confirm that there are two peaks in the gain spectrum and that the refractive index does indeed change rapidly with wavelength in between. Next they send a 3.7-microsecond long laser pulse into the caesium cell, which is 6 centimetres long, and show that, at the correct wavelength, it emerges from...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer diagnosed in industrialized nations (Benson et al. 2008). Worldwide, colon cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths, and it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States (Janout & Kollarova 2001). Risk of developing colon cancer increases with age; more than 90 percent of cases occur after age 50 (American Cancer Society 2005). A family history of colon cancer is another major risk factor....

R. Stichler et al. compared two methods of measuring treadwear in a paper. Eleven tires were each measured for treadwear by two methods: one based on weight, and the other on groove wear. The data, in thousands of miles, are in the table. Use the paired ?-test to answer the following: at the 5% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that, on average, the two measurement methods give different results? Weight Method ------------------- Groove Method --------------...

How many copies of this gene are present in: A haploid yeast cell?   A tetraploid yeast cell? A diploid strain that is monosomic for chromosome IV? A homozygous deletion strain that includes the entire RPS24 locus?   A haploid...
