Construct a flow chart for the separation of caffeine from vivarin tablets. Some additives of vivarin are polyethylene glycol and polysorbate 80, titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide, D&C yellow #10 and yellow #6 aluminum lake dyes, carnauba wax, dextrose. Also used dichloromethane, sodium carbonate and water. All components need to be included in the flow chart

Solutions

Expert Solution

Flow chart in the form of points to separate caffeine from vivarin tablets-

  1. - Obtain two vivarin tablets noting the percentage of active ingredients.
  2. Determine the mass of the tablets.
  3. Obtain and determine the mass of approximately 8 grams of Sodium carbonate.
  4. Crush the tablets with a pestal and mortar.
  5. Add 60ml of distilled water.
  6. Add the Sodium carbonte to the solution.
  7. Add a Teflon boiling chip.
  8. Heat soluton to boiling on a hot plate - maintain boiling for 2 minutes.
  9. Allow the hot mixture to settle slightly- some solid particles will remain undissolved.
  10. Attach an iron ring to a ring stand.
  11. Insert a 125ml separatory funnel into the iron ring using a clay trinagle if necessary to support funnel.
  12. Adjust height of iron ring so that stem of separatory funnel fits just inside the 150ml beaker.
  13. Place a glass funnel into the neck of the separatory funnel.
  14. Make a boat of glass wool and place in the bottom of galss funnel.
  15. Deacnt the sample solution into the glass funnel allowing the liquid to drain into the 125ml separatory funnel.
  16. Rinse the beaker with a small amount of distilled waterand pas the water through the glass funnel to the separatory funnel.
  17. Allow the filtrate in the separatory funnel to cool to the room temperature.
