In: Biology
Choose two animal tissues (epithelial, connective, nervous, or muscle tissues) and compare and contrast the makeup of each, considering the structure, function, and interactions (or lack of interactions) between the cells.
The differences between the epithelial and connective tissues are explained as under-:
Epithelial tissues | Connective tissues | |
Structure |
1) These tissues are formed of cells and small amount of intercellular matrix. 2) The cells are either arranged in single or multi-layered. |
1) These tissues are formed of cells and large amount of intercellular matrix. 2) The cells do not show any particular arrangement and are scattered in the matrix. |
Functions |
1) Covers the organs internally and externally. 2) Helps in intercellular transportation, protection of cells and selective absorption. |
1) Supports other tissues and organs. 2) Aids in formation of muscles and bones, working of blood and lymph. |
Location | These tissues are present above the basement membrane and are found in lungs, kidneys, skin and mucous membranes. | These tissuesare present below the basement membrane. These are found in bones, tendons, ligaments, blood and nerves. |
Surrounded by | special proteins, desmosomes and hemidesmosomes. | blood capillaries and elastic and collagen fibres. |
