Saudi Government support for the private sector employees during COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in reduced layoffs”.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted economies all over the globe, as result of which countries are facing recession with high unemployment rate across countries.

To understand better understand the statement that Saudi government support for the private sector employees during COVID-19 has resulted in reduced layoffs we need to understand how COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the economies across globe.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic the countries has been forced to go into lockdown which resulted in disruptions in economic activities which lead to higher unemployment due locked factories, resturants, hotels and the demand for other services reduced drastically. And when the demand for goods and services decreases firms are forced to let go their employees since their revenue has gone down, so they can't pay the salary of employees. This causes the layoffs in the private sector, and as result of which unemployment increases and as more people got unemployed the demand for goods and services reduced more and this vicious cycle goes on.

Now because the Saudi government has supported the private sector employees through various cash transfer schemes which meant that even when the country was in lockdown, employees not earning money has some money to spend which resulted in higher demand as opposed to the case if there were no support from the government. So as the demand increased the firm's sales didn't went down as much as it otherwise would have so they didn't layoff as many employees as they would have otherwise in the absence of government support to private sector employee.

Conclusion : The Saudi government support to private sector employees meant that the demand in the economy didn't fall by heavily and as a result the layoff got reduced.
