What you are to do is select a specific material (although the selection does not have to be approved by the Instructor, it cannot be generic [e.g., metal] but instead must be specific [e.g., 6061 aluminium metal alloy or PMMA polymer]).

What you are to do is select a specific material (although the selection does not have to be approved by the Instructor, it cannot be generic [e.g., metal] but instead must be specific [e.g., 6061 aluminium metal alloy or PMMA polymer]). For the material chosen you will need to determine some material specifications, properties, attributes (availability, cost, fabricability, service life, colour, texture, etc.) that make this material unique and interesting to you. Also tell me about some of the applications for this material and why you think the material was chosen for those applications.

Expert Solution

AS 336. In British standard it is LM13. Its some of properties arelusted below

Brinnel hardness number 110 to 130

Elastic modulus: 75GPa

Poissons ratio:0.33

Shear modulus: 28 GPa

Thermal conductivity 120 W/mK

Chemical Composition: About 12 wt% of Si. Other alloying elements are copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, tin and remaining aluminium.

Itscost us around 5$ per kg.

They retain strength at elevated temperature and hence used in IC engine pistons. AA336 based metal matrix composites are used in brake shoe applications as it is having high specific strength and good thermal conductivity to disippate heat.

Sicontent makes machining of thismaterial easier. Carbide toppled tools are used for machining of this material
