Come up with the best Genus species of bacteria for each case. Given the following description:

Gram (+) cocci arranged in grape-like clusters

Non-spore former

Produced the enzyme catalase

Beta-Hemolytic

Produces the enzyme coagulase

Acid from mannitol

Yellow-gold colony pigment

Novobiocin sensitive

Options are Micrococcus, Planococcus, or Staphyloccus.

Explain the morphology, physiology and virulence factors.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Gram + cocci arranged in grape like clusters - Staphylococcus

2. Non -spore former - Micrococcus , planococcus and staphylococcus

3. catalase - Micrococcus , planococcus and staphylococcus

4. beta hemolytic - staphyloccoccus

5. Coagulase positive - staphylococcus

6. Mannitol fermentation - staphylococcus

7. Yellow gold colonies - Staphylococcus

8. Novobiocin sensitive - staphylococcus

Staphylococcus

  • Gram positive cocci , arranged in clusters .
  • They are 0.5 to 1micrometer in diameter.
  • They may occur in chains
  • They colonise in the nasal passages .
  • They have many virulence factors like surface proteins , immunoglobulin binding protein A which inhibits pahgocytosis. Toxins for tissue damaging like hyaluronidase , staphylokinase , enterotoxin for hemolysis , lipase and nuclease.
  • They grow rapidly and abundantly in aerobic conditions.

Micrococcus

  • Large gram positive bacteria , arranged in tetrads usually.
  • It usually contaminates clinical specimens .
  • It affects immunocompromised patients .
  • Virulence factors for septic shock and inflammatory response

Planococcus

  • Gram positive , Cocci, arranged in pairs or tetrads
  • It is closely related to bacillus .
  • It secretes capsule and lethal toxin as virulence factors.

Please give the genus and species of each answer. 11. The colonies are typically large, gray-white and opaque on blood agar. Most strains recovered from clinical isolates are nonpigmented; colonies with a deep red pigmentation may be encountered. On MacConkey agar they appear nonpigmented after 24 hours but become lactose positive. The bacterial cells are gram-negative straight rods. The biochemical reactions are indole negative, methyl red negative, VP positive, motile, citrate positive, urease negative, and hydrogen sulfide negative ___________________________________________________________________________________ 12....
