Our point of view on the given topic is as follows:

  1. The Ozone layer contains a high concentration of ozone (O3), which is a relatively unstable molecule made up of three atoms of oxygen (O). Even though it comprises a very small part of the atmosphere, it is extremely crucial for life on Earth.
  2. It acts as a shield in the Earth's stratosphere, which is a layer of the atmosphere between 10 and 40 km above the earth and absorbs most of the Sun's harmful Ultra-Violate (UV) radiations. It protects biological processes on the Earth which are essential for sustaining life. The layer protects humans from the adverse effects of UV radiation such as skin cancer, cataract, and impaired immune systems. The depletion of the ozone layer poses an increased threat from such diseases.
  3. The Ozone layer absorbs the harmful UV rays from the sun thereby protecting the eyes and skin of humans and other living beings.
  4. Excess or direct exposure of UV rays on aquatic eco-systems leads to a decrease in the growth of phytoplankton, which is a light-sensitive organism essential for a balanced eco-system.
  5. Increased exposure to UV rays affects plant growth, photosynthesis, and the fertility of the soil.
  6. Excess UV rays have a negative impact on the biogeochemical cycle, which refers to the essential cycling of chemicals such as carbon and energy throughout the Earth.
  7. Ozone gets created in the stratosphere primarily by UV radiation. High-energy UV rays strike oxygen molecules (O2) and split it into two single oxygen atoms, known as atomic oxygen. This split atomic oxygen combines with the ordinary oxygen molecule to form a molecule of ozone. Our atmosphere contains so much oxygen, that the high-energy ultraviolet rays are completely absorbed in the stratosphere.
  8. The formation of ozone is a continuous process in the stratosphere. Ozone has the ability to absorb a wide range of UV energy. Low-energy UV radiation is absorbed by the ozone molecule which splits into an ordinary oxygen molecule and a free oxygen atom. This free oxygen atom again re-joins with an oxygen molecule to form another ozone molecule. This "ozone-oxygen cycle," constantly converts harmful ultraviolet radiation into heat.
  9. Other than the natural "ozone-oxygen cycle" process, other factors also affect the concentration of ozone in the stratosphere. Ozone and free oxygen atoms are highly unstable and hence react very easily with nitrogen, hydrogen, chlorine, and bromine compounds that are found naturally in Earth's atmosphere. The ozone loss helps to balance the production of ozone by high-energy UV rays striking oxygen molecules.
  10. Scientists have established that ozone levels change periodically as part of various natural cycles such as the changing seasons, winds, etc. Thus, natural processes regulate the balance of ozone in the stratosphere. As long as ozone is being created at the same rate that it is being destroyed, the total amount of ozone will remain the same.

---------------------------

In conclusion, the Ozone layer protects living organisms from several harmful UV rays. Hence, it is critical for the survival of living organisms.
