Which is an example of an antagonistic muscle group?
a) Latissimus dorsi and pectoralis major
b) Biceps brachii and brachioradialis
c) Gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior
d) Semitendinosus and semimembranosus
Hi,
Before answering the question, let us discuss about Antagonistic muscle group.
What is Antagonistic muscle group ?
This is a group of muscles that produce movement by opposing the action of other muscle. Here, the other muscle is group of agonists muscle. Therefor, we can conclude antagonistic muscle group is group of antagonist and agonist muscles.
Example of Antagonistic muscle group is -
Option C - Gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior.
Tibialis anterior is muscle of leg, which originates from tibia and inserts in medial cunieform and first metatarsal bone. The action of tibialis anterior is dorsifelxion and inversion of the foot.
Gastrocnemius is also the muscle of leg(posterior part of leg),which originates from femur forming Achilles tendon with soleus muscle and then inserts into the calceneus bone. The action of gastrocnemius is planterflexion of foot.
So,these both muscles perform as antagonistic group to produce dorsiflexion and planterflexion.
