The -Lucas test is used to discriminate between different types of alcohol. The differential in reactivity of the three alcohols with HCl is exactly what separates them from one another. – Alcohols react with hydrogen halides to generate alkyl halides in this reaction. The following is the general equation:

ROH + HX → RX + H2O –

Tertiary carbocations are engaged in tertiary alcohols, secondary carbocations are involved in secondary alcohols, and primary alcohols are involved in primary alcohols. – Tertiary carbocations are more stable than secondary carbocations, which are in turn more stable than primary carbocations. As a result, the higher the stability of a carbocation, the easier it will be to generate it from an alkyl halide and the faster the process will be.
