Elaborate the application, advantages and disadvantages of Beers law in the pharmaceutical spectroscopy?
Beer's law states that the absorbance, through a known length, is directly proportional to the concentration of the solution. In other words, as long as we know how far the light traveled through the sample, then we can determine the concentration of the solution based on the absorbance.
Applications:- 1)It is used to determine the concentration of a chemical.
2) As the absorbance also depends on the material, it is also used for elemental analysis.
3) Quality control of medicine is possible with the help of Beer's law.
Advantages:- 1) The law is obeyed by a wide range of chemicals. Almost all solutions obey it.
2) Graph of intensity vs concentration is linear at low concentrations.
Disadvantages:- 1) The graph shows non-linearity at higher concentrations (>0.01 M)
2) This law is not useful if the solution has fluorescence or phosphorescence.
3) Can not used in conditions where the refractive index of the solution is not constant and varies as length.
4) Due to the external radiation, solutes can form compex, which can change the concentration of the solution.
