A developed TLC plate was examined under UV light. Was it a necessary step if both ferrocene and acetylferrocene are visible without a visualization method? Why or why not?

I need at least a paragraph response to this question!

Expert Solution

Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a useful technique commonly used for the qualitative determination of the purity of samples as well as the relative polarities and separation of the components present in a mixture. In the visualisation part, we should look at our TLC plate under ultraviolet light. The dye present in the TLC plate will glow green under UV light. Many compounds absorb UV light, leaving dark spots on the plate. Basically visualisation method is required for colourless compounds. Ferrocene and acetylferrocene are strongly coloured, so we will be able to see the spots without any visualisation method depending on the fact that the colour should be prominent on TLC plate.

An unknown mixture was analyzed using TLC on a silica gel plate and developed in 1:6 ethyl acetate:hexane, and gave 2 spots with Rf values of 0.6 and 0.5 respectively. 1)Would this be considered a good separation between the two? Briefly explain. 2)Which spot represents the more polar compound(s)? 3)Can you say for sure how many compounds are contained in the mixture? If so, how many are there? Briefly explain. 4)If not, what further conditions might be performed to determine...
