Will all haloalkanes that have ethane as the parent chain not have numbers in the name? Also, could there be a haloalkane with methane as the parent chain. If so, could you give an example?
no . some haloalkanes enthane as the parent chain in the name have numbers
haloalkanes that have ethane as the parent chain have numbers in the name
example 1 )
suppose C2H4Cl2 is ethane derivative. it can be of two compounds
Cl CH2-CH2-Cl -----------------------> 1,2 -dichloro ethane
CH3-CHCl2 ---------------------------> 1,1- dichloro ethane
example 2 )
C2H3Cl3 can have two compounds
CH3- CHCl3 -------------------> 1,1,1-trichloroethane
Cl CH2 - CHCl2 --------------> 1,1,2-trichloroethane
so finally we can say some halo compounds derived from ethane can have number in parent chain
haloalkane with no numbers in their names :
CH3-CH2 Cl -------------------> chloroethane
CH3-CH2Br---------------------> bromoethane
haloalkane with methane as the parent chain no need of numbers because here only one carbon is present
example :
CH3Cl -------------> chloromethane
CH2Cl2 -------------> dichloromethane
CHCl3---------------> trichloromethane
CCl4----------------> tetrachloromethane
