Over the weekend, a soccer fan in England made news by getting on the field and punching an athlete before being caught and arrested. What access to athletes should fans have?
Outside of being at the game, fans have unprecedented access to athletes via social media. What is too much? What can be done about it?
Fans should have access to athletes when they are doing practice at their club. Here, fans can get autographs from the athletes. Fans should also be granted the access when athletes participate in charities and events. But, on the playground and match situation, there should be no access and strict security to be given to the athlete to prevent any unpleasant scenario. It will also negatively affect the performance.
Fans have access to athletes via social media and it is too much in the form of overly criticizing the performance of the athletes and using abusive languages against the athletes. These fans forget that they are also humans and win & loss is the part of the game.
The social media should regulate the
publishing of these comments and posts and can also block the
account that bring many such posts. Further, athletes can also
restrict fans from writing on their time line or getting in their
friend list. So, social media can act strictly to prevent abuse of
the athletes.
