At what age should workers be requested to stop working?
Many people still feel that 65 is a good retirement age, others argue for 70. Even others argue that there should be no age restrictions on working. What do you think? As many people grow older, they become more interested in keeping busy through work. Some employers fear loss of productivity from older workers. A few are fearful that older workers using machinery may be a danger to themselves as well as customers and other employees.
Are there any additional laws or guidelines that can be created to increase the protection of employees against further acts of discrimination?
It is pertinent to note that every person's body is different and hence everyone has a different ability to do things when they get old. Their reaction time is also different. Considering this, there must be a common policy to fix the age for workers to stop working. Some workers might be able to work beyond this age limit while others may not. For many, 60 is the age where hard labour starts to become burdensome. Therefore, this is the age where workers should be allowed to stop work. If someone wants to work more, they should be given an extension of maximum of 5 years depending on physical conditions. They can be shifted to less strenuous work also. It is right of employers to fear the loss of productivity which a younger person can bring but an older worker also compensates it with his experience and fewer mistakes. So productivity is not much of an issue.
Laws set in place are enough for workers protection. If any additional protection is required, they can be evaluated from time to time.Only implementation of standards to protect workers right must be audited by regulators from time to time and employers fined for non compliance. Implementation is the key to workers right more than the laws itself.
