what produces a torque on the boat and what effect does it have on the boat?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Torque is the twisting or rotating effort of any shaft.orque is directly proportional to the horsepower passing through and inversely proportional to the shaft speed (RPM).

In case of boat engine delivers torque through its crankshaft to the drive shaft and finally to the propeller shaft. The transfer of torque, or twisting force, from the drive shaft to the propeller shaft is made through gears. The torque developed at the engine is thus delivered through shafts and gears to the propeller

And the engine will produce the necessary torque and it is connected to a propulsion system and the ship is moving with the help of a propulsion device. The propulsion device may be a fixed pitch propeller, controllable pitch propeller, azimuth propeller, shrouded propeller, or a voith schneider propeller. Main engine or whatever may be the propulsor, when it rotates it imparts momentum to the medium (ie) to the water. When a propeller is rotating, it produces thrust on water. Now the thrust from propeller is transferred to the water. Since the amount of water is enormous according to Newtons Third Law, the thrust comes back to the ship and this thrust moves the ship in ahead (or astern) direction. so it can be said that an engine will produce a torque and it is used by the propulsion system to trust the boat ahead.
