You are hoping to get an estimate of the number of birch trees in a local park. You have a satellite image of the park, and plan to use quadrat sampling to estimate the number of birch trees in the park. The park is 1000m by 1000m. Describe how you can set up your quadrat and how you would then use the data you collect to estimate the number of trees in the entire park. (Include a sample calculation).
solution:
given data:
For this estimation of tree counting in the whole park we can use the quadrant sampling method like this-
In this qudrant each small squarew is 100 m both in horizontal and vertically. And there are 10 small square both in horizontally and verically. So the length becomes 1000m X 1000m.
Now, for each birch tree in the square just put a simple dot so the count will be very easy.
For example- In this sample quadrant in-
A1 3 dot which means 3 birch tree
A2- 2 tree
A3- 2 tree
A4- 3 tree
A5- 2 tree
A6- 2 tree
A7- 3 tree
A8- 3 tree
A9- 2 tree
A10- 1 tree
Like this in the B there are-
B1- 1 tree
B2- 1 tree
B3- 1 tree
B4- 2 tree and so on..
and by this step by step the number of trees around the park is calculated and the the dots are put in the small square which represents the tree count.
