The first waveform component is the P wave, indicating electrical activity that triggers atrial contraction.The following factors influence how a clinician chooses to analize an ECG rhythm strip;

• Check the date and time that the ECG was performed.
• Step 1 – Heart rate. What's a normal adult heart rate?
• Step 2 – Heart rhythm. A patient's heart rhythm can be regular or irregular.
• Step 3 – Cardiac axis.
• Step 4 – P waves.
• Step 5 – PR interval.
• Step 6 – QRS complex.
• Step 7 – ST segment.
• Step 8 – T waves.

Normal intervals

Normal range 120 – 200 ms (3 – 5 small squares on ECG paper).

QRS duration (measured from first deflection of QRS complex to end of QRS complex at isoelectric line). Normal range up to 120 ms (3 small squares on ECG paper).
