Each of the following passages contain arguments. Please indicate what inferences are being made, using the statement letters and the word “therefore” (as in: “A therefore B,” “C and D therefore E,” etc.). Note: there may be more than one inference made in the passage.

  1. (A) Illegal immigrants pay local sales taxes, and many of them also pay state, local, and federal income tax and Social Security tax. (B) They also purchase items from local merchants, increasing the amount these merchants pay in taxes. (C) In addition, they work for low salaries, which increases the earnings of their employers and the amount of taxes these employers pay. Thus, (D) it is not correct to say that illegal immigrants contribute nothing to the communities in which they live.”

Solutions

Expert Solution

A, B and C therefore D.

The given passeage argues that it is incorrect to say that illegal immigrants make no contribution to the communities in which they live.

Since illegal immigrants pay different taxes personally (A), contribute to the financial prosperity of local merchants (B) and their own employers (C) who thus pay more taxes, therefore (D) the notion that illegal immigrants don't  contribute to the host communities is wrong

A, B and C therefore D.
