In 2010, the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted, impacting millions of lives by disrupting air travel throughout Europe for weeks. Generate five ideas for a system that could prevent future ash clouds from this volcano from impacting European air traffic.
Five ideas:
1) The London Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) was responsible for providing information about the ash plume to the relevant civil aviation authorities in the form of Volcanic Ash Advisories (VAA).
2) New category of restricted air space called a Time Limited Zone must created. These are similar to Airspace at which airlines must produce certificates of compliance in order for their aircraft to enter these areas.
3) National capabilities for measuring and predicting the extent and type of volcano and character of volcanic ash in and around airspace should be enhanced.
4) Mechanisms should be placed in so that a communications center can be established, as and when required. So through this public comes to know the future airspace closures.
5) At a national level plans should be developed to control the air travel disruptions and arrangements to find out the eruption before the act should be developed. Sensors in the satellites should be developed to detect the volcanic ash in the air space to stop air traffic.
