In August 2010, massive downpours caused widespread flooding across Pakistan, killing at least 1500 people. Many times flood waters breached a riverbank and cut a new course for hundreds of miles, destroying villages days later that were not warned of the impending flood waters. Develop 10 ideas that could have prevented the deaths in these villages. Provide descriptions and/or sketches of each idea.

There may be the following ideas which can prevent us from flood disaster:

 

(1) Improve drainage efficiency: We can construct pumping stations, Water gates, tunnels etc.

 

(2) Construction of structure: Flood barriers are effective means to stop excessive amount of water rushing into lane grounds.

 

(3) River defences: Rivers are prone to flood and are often carefully managed. Defences such as bunds, reservoirs and weird are used to prevent river from overflow.

 

(4) Mitigation measure: Land owner should not construct permanent structure like bridges; fence etc. across watercourses for the storage of water nearby the river.

 

(5) Coastal defences: Coastal defences such as seawalls, beach nourishment and barrier islands can be employed.

 

(6) We must take suitable measures for pre house preparation such as electricity, sewages to ensure electricity panel to be installed at high position above flood level.

 

(7) We can take care of ourselves by taking personal safety measures such as record of emergency contact numbers or preparation of emergency kit should be easily available.

 

(8) We can also predict the flood calamities by commemorate the flood records and accordingly we can take suitable action.

 

(9) Medical facilities to the victims should be provided with incentive care.

 

(10) Regular inspection of the river, canals shores also helps us to prevent from flood disaster.
