2. List the different types of electron carriers within the electron transport system. For every pair of electrons each complex transfers, determine how many protons are translocated.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Electron carriers carry electrons(e-) only or electrons and hydrogen both.some of the electron carriers are:

1)cytochromes-only e-

2)iron-sulfur proteins- only e-

3)flavoproteins-both hydrogen and e-

4)Quinone proteins-both hydrogen and e-

Examples :

Cytochrome-c reductase,co-enzyme Q,etc..,

the elctron carriers in ETC form a copmlex.there are five complexes mentioned above.

=}For every pair of electrons,

1)The reaction,NADH to Q Pumps 4 protons across intermembrane space for 2e-. FADH2 gives elcetons to complex 2 to Q but no protons are pumped.

2)Q to cytochrome-C(complex-3),2 protons are pumped.

3)cytochrome-C oxidase to Oxygen,(complex-4) pumps 4protons.

Oxygen is the most electeonegative acceptor.

Hence a total no.of 10 protons are pumped for a pair of electrons or 1NADH molecule In ETC, which produce a overall of 2.5 ATP.

The electron transport chain has two diffusible electron carriers, ubiquinone, which shuttles electrons to the third mitochondrial complex, and cytochrome c, which shuttles electrons to the last mitochondrial complex (see figure below). Would it be possible for cells to use only one of these two diffusible electron carriers to shuttle electrons at each of these two steps of the electron transport chain? Why or why not?

In the electron-transport chain, electrons are handed off from low reduction potential carriers to increasingly higher reduction potential carriers. At some steps this exchange of electrons is sufficiently exergonic to drive proton pumping. Based on this, explain why FADH2 results in less ATP generation per mole compared with NADH.

Regarding the electron transport chain, are all of the complexes within the chain integral? Specifically, is complex 2 integral or peripheral? Some images display it as integral, meaning that it does enter the membrane but doesn't span the entirety of it like a transmembrane protein. These different images confuse me, so I'm hoping to get some clarification.
