Identify three common office minor surgical procedures
and develop a checklist of equipment and disposable supplies for
each of the three procedures.
Select one of the procedures and physically set up a
tray for the procedure using the completed checklist.
Submit all three checklists for points
Three minor office surgical procedures are:-
A) Incision and Drainage
This is a procedure which is done to allow drainage of fluid or pus that has accumulated under the skin. The incision is made large enough to allow the drainage and done at a specific area. The drainage indication involves incomplete hemostasis, incomplete removal of foreign bodies, abscess formation etc. The things that are required for the same are anesthesia with 1% procaine solution, Blade 11 to puncture and cut the site, small round nose forceps for making the opening wider, forceps with blade for opening the site for drainage, sterile gauze for dressing, sterilized scissors.
B ) Tracheotomy – This is a minor surgery which leads to opening into the trachea for an indefinite period of time. There are different types of varieties depending on the level. In this there is an incision done on the windpipe to help in relieving any sort of obstruction to breathing. The instruments required for the same are two small scalpels, needles, one grooved director, tenaculum, a pair of artery forceps, dissecting forceps, pair of scissor, sharp pointed tenotome, tracheal dilator, ligatures, tracheal forceps, sponges and flexible catheter.
c) Extraction – This process of extraction applies to the painless removal of the tooth or root or just a portion of tooth with small surgical equipments. It is used in cases when tooth has decayed and cannot be restored, bifurcation due to decay and primary teeth that interferes with proper tooth alignment. The most common instruments used for the same are upper straight forceps, upper pre-molar forceps, bayonet forceps which is majorly used for upper retained roots, chisel elevators, sterilized cotton etc.
Tray set-up for Incision and Drainage
For setting up a tray for performing incision and drainage, not much equipments are need. Here are the equipments required for setting up a tray:-
a) Local Anesthesia – This is important and required as it locally makes the area free of free and numb it for the process.
b) Forceps
c) Hemostat
d) Irrigation syringe
e) Packing material
f) Scalpel with blade no. 11
g) Culture swab
