VOLVOX LIFE CYCLE

  • Volvox is a multicellular algae that has a haplontic life cycle.
  • The dominant stage of volvox is free-living haploid (n) gametophyte and the sporophyte is represented only by the diploid zygote (2n).
  • Volvox shows the differentiation of both reproductive and somatic cells
  • The algae adopts asexual reproduction in favourable conditions and during unfavourable conditions they shift to sexual reproduction.
  • Asexual reproduction-The reproductive cells (gonidia) produce daughter colonies, which on maturation get released from the parent.
  • The gonidium then undergoes multiple division to form a colony.
  • Sexual reproduction is oogamous. The coenobia may be either monoecious or dioecious.
  • The male gamate is called spermatozoa and female gamates are known as ova.
  • Ova are large and non-motile and are A produced inside the oogonium.
  • Spermatozoa are produced inside the antheridium. The sperms have a spindle-shape and has a pair of apical cilia
  • Antherozoids move towards the oogonium by the chemotactic movement.
  • They enter the oogonia and oogonia one antherozoid fertilises the egg to form a diploid zygote
  • The Zygote forms a cyst .The zygote then detaches from the parent and remains dormant for a longer duration.
  • The zygote then undergoes meiotic cell division to form four haploid cells.
  • These haploid cells undergo multiple mitotic cell division to form a colony containing coenobium.
