Classify the following bonds as ionic, polar covalent, or covalent, and give your reasons why,
(a) the SiSi bond in Cl3SiSiCl3
ionic bond, polar covalent or covalent bond?
Reason why?
(b) the SiCl bond in Cl3SiSiCl3
ionic bond, polar covalent or covalent bond?
Reason why?
(c) the CaF bond in CaF2
ionic bond, polar covalent or covalent bond?
Reason why?
(d) the NH bond in NH3
ionic bond, polar covalent or covalent bond?
Reason why?
(a) the SiSi bond in Cl3SiSiCl3
Answer= Non polar covalent Bond
Reason: same element so same elctronegativity.
b) the SiCl bond in Cl3SiSiCl3
Answer= covalent bond
Reason:Electronegativity diference is only 1.26. For polar covalent it must must be 1.4.
c) the CaF bond in CaF2
Answer: Ionic, formation of cation and anion
d) NH bond in NH3
Answer = polar covalent ,
Reason= electronegativity difference > 1.4
