f Patients take in immunosuppressant drugs and Steroid ( esp Dexamethasone ) together after grafting , is there needs for caution : Not to getting vaccine ? and if it is true why?
Answer
Immunosuppressant drugs (Drug that suppresses the immune system) and steroids are given to the recipients of the graft patients (kidney transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, etc.) in order to reduce the immune system to avoid graft rejection.
Most of the live vaccine contains live attenuated microorganisms which are capable of replicating vaccine strain and produces diseases in the body.
Severe systemic reactions will occur with patients who receiving immunosuppressant drugs and steroids and also chances for a reaction towards the graft. Therefore live vaccines such as polio, measles, BCG vaccines etc. should not be administered.
The efficacy of the vaccine will be reduced if a person receives a vaccine soon after the grafting.
Timing of the vaccination after grafting should be decided on the basis of the degree of immunosuppression and the need for vaccination.
The recommended interval between the grafting and vaccination should be maintained.
