Describe why a plant cell would need a large center vacuole compared to an animal cell that only has smaller vacuoles.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Vacuoles are cell organelles found in both plants and animals cells , where they serve as storage organelle.

Animals have complex systems for various functions, like toxin removal , which are not present in plants. Hence plants rely on other mechanisms to perform the same task.

Now, plants cells need a larger central vacuole than animal cell because :

? plant cells need to store a greater amount of water, nutrients, toxins , etc for survival in adverse conditions than animals .

? vacoule stores a large amount of water which helps to maintain osmotic pressure and cell integrity. Without large vacoules there won't be enough water for plant cells to cope with water stress conditions and plant cells may disintegrate. Vacoules thus maintain cell size and shape in plant cells. But animals maintain cell shape by different mechanism.

? the water stored in plant vacoules is also essential to perform photosynthesis during times of need.

Application of the A&P of the Animal & Plant Cell: Relate the structures of the cell (animal or plant) to parts of some other concrete or abstract structure and explain how each structure connects. Example: Gas to a car is to the mitochondria of the cell. Explanation: Without gas a car would have no means of energy for power to move. Just as the mitochondria "powerhouse" provides energy for the cell. * Whatever structure chosen to compare the cell to...

Plant cells are different from animal cells in several ways. All plant cells have a cell wall during their entire existence. The cell wall has many different functions in different cell types. Compare and contrast between the two types of plant cell walls as to their chemical make up, shape, when they are formed, and morphological properties. Include all chemical components in the cell wall we discussed during lecture. Draw two figures showing how each of these cell walls are...
