Alarm stage of genral adaption syndrome (GAS) refers to the initial symptoms that body experiences under stress condition. The basic nature of the human body against any viable situation includes ‘fight or flight’ which is the only physiological response to the stressful situation. In this period of time the heart rate increases owing to the releasing of the cortisol which is a stress hormone. Moreover it boosts the secretion of adrenaline that provide energy. This stage is known as the alarm stage of general adaption syndrome.

GAS can occur with any kind of stress that people face during their lifetime. It generally includes:

1. Loss of job

2. Any emergency medical issues

3. Sudden financial loss in any way

4. Family issues

5. Any kind of physical or mental trauma

The fight-or-flight stage in GAS is the protection phase of the body. A higher level of hormones benefits the body and improves the concentration to focus and tackle the unwarranted situation.

Although the alarm stage is not difficult but prolonged stress leads to the exhaustion phase that alters the physiological response towards stress. It raises the risk for chronic high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, depression or other healthcare ailments. Further it boosts the chances of any kind of infection or cancer owing to the weak immune system.

The nursing intervention for the GAS includes

1. The nursing personnel must recognize the nonverbal cues from the physical or psychological stressor.

2. Follow up measures to reduce environmental stressors including noise, pollution or temperature that might have effective roll in generating stress.

3. Assess the critical environmental factors including fear, lack of confidence, uncertaininty, lack of knowledge etc.

4. Monitor and evaluate the techniques of the client for stress management.

5. Lastly the nursing personnel must provide the stress management techniques including relaxation meditation or exercise.

These nursing interventions might help in reducing the stress of a GAS patient.
